Wintergreen

Wintergreen is an 850-square-foot addition to a Fountain Valley main house — and a project that makes the case that new construction and existing architecture don't have to compete. They can speak the same language. Wintergreen was designed and built as a single coherent piece: a modern California addition with vaulted volume, warm natural materials, and a seamless indoor-outdoor relationship that turns the backyard into a genuine extension of the living space.

The great room is the heart of the addition. We designed it with a vaulted ceiling anchored by an exposed wood beam — a detail that adds structural character without tipping into rustic — and floored it in wide-plank light oak that runs continuously through every interior space. A floor-to-ceiling vertical wood slat panel grounds one wall as a quiet architectural feature, providing texture and depth without ornamentation. Two black-framed windows flank the media wall and carry the exterior's black aluminum fenestration motif inside — a detail that shows up throughout the project and gives it its visual consistency.

The indoor-outdoor connection is where Wintergreen earns its identity. We specified a multi-panel black aluminum bi-fold door system that opens the great room completely to the covered porch — a transition space with a natural wood-plank ceiling overhead and large-format grey porcelain tile underfoot.

The bathrooms were each given a distinct material story within the same design vocabulary. One features floor-to-ceiling vertical blue-grey tile in the walk-in shower with frameless glass and matte black fixtures throughout. Another pairs warm terracotta-toned square tile with a walnut floating vanity, vessel sink, and marble-look countertop. A third is finished with a concrete-top vanity, dark slate floor tile, and a recessed medicine cabinet — clean and considered. Every fixture package was specified in matte black, tying all three rooms back to the same architectural thread.

Delivered with all City of Fountain Valley permits. Wintergreen is FGRED's strongest example of addition work done at an architectural scale — where the new square footage doesn't just add room, it adds identity.
